Many jobs are filled before they're ever posted. A well-targeted spontaneous application puts you in front of a company when it starts looking, or keeps you in its files for the next opening.
Target a team, not a company
Pick a department and a role you can do from day one: "data analyst in the risk team", not "any position". The more precise you are, the easier it is to forward your application to the right manager.
Use the official channel first
Most large employers have a spontaneous application form on their careers page. Use it: it puts you in their candidate database. Then, if you can, reach the hiring manager with a short message.
A message in five lines
Short and specific beats long and general:
- Who you are, in one sentence
- The team and the role you're aiming for
- One achievement that proves you can do it
- Your availability
- Your CV attached, as a PDF

Yes, especially in growing sectors and for internships. Their success depends on targeting the right team.
Should I attach a cover letter?
A short message is enough; keep a full letter for when it's asked for.
How many companies should I contact?
Fewer, well-targeted applications beat a mass mailing.
