Not every employer reads cover letters, but those who do decide fast. A good letter is short, specific to the company and focused on what you bring. Here is a structure that works in French and in English.

Three paragraphs are enough

Keep the whole letter under one page, around 200 to 300 words:

  • Why this company and this role: one precise reason, not a compliment
  • What you bring: two achievements that match the job ad
  • The next step: your availability for an interview

Make it about them

Mention a product, a project, a value or a recent announcement of the company. Recruiters can tell a letter written for them from one sent to fifty companies.

French formalities, made simple

In French, open with "Madame, Monsieur," when you don't know the recruiter's name, and close with a simple formula such as "Je vous prie d'agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l'expression de mes salutations distinguées."

In English, "Dear Hiring Manager" and "Kind regards" are enough.

Send it the right way

When an online form asks for a letter, paste it in the field or attach a PDF named with your name and the role.

By email, the email itself can be the letter: a clear subject line with the role, three short paragraphs, and your CV attached as a PDF.
